What is the Main Use of Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide?
Electrolytic
manganese dioxide has a wide range of applications in modern industry, including in everyday applications such as remote control batteries and tap water purification. Electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) is a high-purity,
highly active manganese dioxide (MnO₂) produced by electrolysis. It offers significant advantages over natural manganese dioxide or other chemically produced manganese dioxide in terms of crystal structure, purity, and electrochemical properties, making it an indispensable material in many key industrial sectors.

EMD production primarily involves three steps: liquid preparation, electrolysis, and finished product processing. First, during the liquid preparation stage, manganese oxide ore powder undergoes a series of leaching and purification steps to remove impurities such as iron and heavy metals, resulting in a pure manganese sulfate solution. Impurity removal is crucial in this process, and hydrogen peroxide is used for deep iron removal. During the electrolysis process, the purified solution reacts under the influence of direct current to produce manganese dioxide. Finally, in the finished product processing step, the crude EMD product deposited on the anode is stripped off, crushed, repeatedly washed to remove residual electrolyte, dried, ground, and sieved, ultimately yielding a black or brownish-black powder of varying particle size requirements. Electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) has a wide range of applications, including in the
battery industry, water treatment, electronics, and chemical industries. In the battery industry, it is primarily used as the positive electrode material for dry-cell batteries, such as alkaline zinc-manganese batteries, high-performance zinc-carbon batteries, and lithium-manganese batteries. During battery discharge, EMD acts as a depolarizer, accepting electrons through the electrochemical reduction reaction (MnO₂ + H₂O + e⁻ → MnOOH + OH⁻), suppressing battery polarization and ensuring stable discharge. Its unique crystalline structure (γ/ε) provides excellent proton (H⁺) and electron (e⁻) transport pathways. It also plays a significant role in other fields.
Electrolytic manganese dioxide's high purity, strong activity, and unique crystal structure demonstrate how industrial materials can achieve value multiplication through precision processing. In the future, as battery technology advances toward higher performance and environmental requirements increase, higher requirements will be placed on the purity, activity, and crystal form control of electrolytic manganese dioxide, and its application areas are expected to further expand.
